Tips & Tipping
France
Tipping summary
Service is legally included in restaurant bills (service compris). Leaving a small extra tip is appreciated but never required.
Cards vs. Cash
Cards are widely accepted in cities and larger towns. Carry some cash for smaller villages, markets, and the occasional café that prefers it.
By situation
Restaurants
€0–€5
By law, a 15% service charge is included in all French restaurant bills. Leaving a few extra euros for good service is appreciated but never expected.
Cafés
€0.50–€2
Rounding up or leaving small coins on the table is common at cafés. Not obligatory but a friendly gesture.
Taxis
Round to nearest euro
Rounding up to the nearest euro or adding €1–2 is typical. Not leaving anything is also acceptable.
Hotel housekeeping
€1–2/night
Leave on the pillow or nightstand daily. Not universal but appreciated, especially at longer stays.
Tour guides
€5–15 per day
For guided tours, a tip of €5–10 for a half-day and €10–15 for a full day is considered thoughtful.
