Tips & Tipping
Mexico
Tipping summary
Tipping is expected and important in Mexico. Service industry workers depend on tips as a significant part of their income.
Cards vs. Cash
Cards are accepted at most hotels and larger restaurants. Street food, markets, and smaller local spots are cash-only. Always carry pesos for tips and everyday purchases.
By situation
Restaurants
10โ15%
Service is usually not included in the bill (propina). 10โ15% is standard; 15โ20% for excellent service. Always check if "servicio incluido" appears on your bill.
Taxis
Round up
Rounding up to the nearest 10โ20 pesos is appreciated but not required. For Uber and app-based rides, you can tip in-app.
Hotel housekeeping
MXN 20โ50/night
Leave pesos daily (not at the end of stay) as housekeeping staff can change each day. Leave on the pillow or desk with a note.
Street food & casual eats
Optional
Tipping at taquerias and street stalls is not expected, but a few pesos in the jar is a nice gesture if you enjoyed it.
Tour guides
MXN 100โ200 per day
For day tours, 10โ15% of the tour cost is appropriate. For private guides, tip more generously.
Parking attendants (franeleros)
MXN 10โ20
Informal parking attendants (franeleros) help you park and watch your car. A small tip when you leave is standard practice.
